A shift is needed…

NaNo Journal 2013 copy

Today, I got to write some of the after effects of Saul’s fight with Kleverland.  In the story, Sam the Automaton is gone, Saul’s hand has been chopped off, only to be replaced with a steam powered hand, and his store has been trashed.  This sends him into a deep depression.

I’ve been depressed once or twice before, but I’ve never had depression, where I felt like life had nothing going for it anymore.  That makes writing these scenes quite hard.  I have to draw on what others have told me depression is like, as well as draw on how I imagine how depression would feel to someone like Saul Deus.  I want to think that I wrote it well enough.  I do plan on him coming out of it eventually, but for now and until the end of this story, he is going to mope and feel sorry for himself.

As I’ve mentioned before, this novel will not end well for Saul, his life will be in shambles.  But the worst is yet to come…the British are coming and they want to make a deal with Saul.  Now, if you remember anything about Saul, maybe you remember that’s he’s racist against the English.  So after everything that’s happened, to Saul, making a deal with Englishmen will be like making a deal with the devil.

The novel is almost over, but the story isn’t done yet.
