I have some good news. Today, I hit 10,000 words! That means I’m officially 1/5th of the way to the goal of 50,000. Not bad for three days into the challenge.
The region I’m a part of on the NaNoWriMo website is Michigan :: Ottawa County-Grand Rapids (OCGR for short), and we do a lot of fun stuff. We have a kickoff party, write-ins, Day of Knockout Noveling (DOKN), etc. We have a good time in OCGR. Anyway, I usually attended the Thursday night write-ins at a local coffee shop. This year, however, no one was offering to host the write-in for Thurdays. So, I stepped up and decided to try hosting. Today was my first go at it. We had a lot of fun. I made a “Give a Prompt, Take a Prompt Jar”, we had several word wars, and we racked up over 20,000 words among the 11 of us that were there. It was a blast. Hosting wasn’t too bad.
Now it’s time to reveal the plot of my 2016 NaNoWriMo novel. I already told you the title, and that it’s an urban fantasy, so here’s the plot of Struggles of a Modern Vampire:
Matt Donavan is a vampire, and he hates it. Not because he’s a creature of the night, or a blood sucker, or even because he can no longer eat anything with garlic in it, but because he struggles to live. He can’t work during the day because he’ll die in the sunlight. He needs to hunt at night, so keeping a third shift job is difficult, and he has no skills, so working from home is not an option. Not to mention that he can barely afford rent and pay his utility bills, never mind a computer. He wonders why vampires are always depicted as rich and lavish when he can’t seem to catch a break.
After running into Jordan, an old high school friend, Matt thinks he found someone who he can confide in, and let’s Jordan into the world of what it’s like to be a vampire living in modern times.
Meanwhile there’s a vampire killing people, and a vampire hunter has been sent by the Bloodline Community to chase the killer down. The hunter zeros in on Matt, thinking he might be the killer.
There it is. I’m not very good at writing short synopses, so hopefully you get an idea of what the novel is about. As the month goes on, there will be more details coming your way.
Current word count for Struggles of a Modern Vampire: 10,905/50,000!
