NaNoWriMo Day 20: Genesis

The time has come for me to go into details about the antagonist for Written in Silence.  Now, unlike Michael and Dianna, my antagonist doesn’t have a full character profile that I’ve written up.  Normally I like to know just as much about my villain as I do about my heroes.  However, this time, I did something different.  The villain doesn’t come into the picture until the last quarter of the story.  He’s mentioned and talked about, but you don’t see him until the end.    This is done on purpose.  Because of his position, it’s important to the story that he stays out of sight.  Who is this unseen villain of the story?

Paul Genesis

The President of New America, Paul Genesis.

Paul Genesis is the son of the man who took over the USA seventy years ago, Eric Genesis.  Eric gained the aid of the military, then killed Jeremy Sassaino, the President of the United States.  Twenty years prior to the beginning of the story, Paul inherited the presidency from his father.  His grand vision for the country began when he moved in on Canada and Mexico and made them apart of New America.  His plans for the future is to eventually take all of South America, and then see about taking the rest of the world, country by country (of course!)

However, soon after Paul Genesis took over, the Old American Movement, led by Ben Sassanio, the son of the man Eric killed to take over the USA, arose.  After battling the underground movements of the OAM, Genesis finally found and killed Ben and his wife, Maria.  But little did Paul know that the son of Ben, Carter Sassaino, whom no one really knew existed, survived the fire that killed his parents.  Carter was quickly adopted by a nice family and was given the name Michael Vadaren.

The OAM was crippled, and Genesis figured he won, and the world would soon be his.  Years passed, but then news got to him that Ben Sassanio had a son, and so he focused on finding and killing that boy.  It took him a year to do so, and when it was confirmed that Michael Vadaren was Carter Sassaino, he tried to kill him.  But as luck would have it, that was the night, Dianna Testa snuck Michael out of his house.  So, by accident, Michael survived the flames of Genesis twice, but both times, the flames killed his family.

Genesis now fears that the knowledge of there being another Sassaino will reawaken the OAM, and he will have to fight, once again to keep his grand vision for New America alive.

* * *

Though Genesis is the main villain, you don’t see him until the final quarter of the book, when Dianna and Michael are captured by the military and taken before him.  I hope you enjoyed this look into the antagonist of the story, he’s been a lot of fun putting together, and I’m currently writing the scene where Dianna and Michael meet him.  A lot of fun for me, I love writing hero/villain interaction.

NaNoWriMo Day 19: The Third Excerpt

Well, now with my novel being past 50,000 words, I figured it was time to give you another excerpt.  I’ve had two already and in case you missed them, you can read the first one here, and the second one here.  The first two were pretty one sided, but I want to show you some interaction between Dianna and Michael.

Again, please remember that this is a vomit draft, so it’ll have only enough editing to make it barely presentable.  Enjoy:

Dianna darted behind a bush that was behind the Vadaren’s house. She didn’t want to be seen, it was well past curfew. Though she knew that she didn’t have to fear the military, she didn’t want have to give her father an excuse as to why she was out at one in the morning.

She looked up at the house. No lights were on, that was good, no one was awake. She crept around the bush, trying to stay out of the yellowish light of the street lamp. She picked up a small pebble and tossed it at the window that was closest to the back yard on the first floor, the one she knew to be Michael’s room. The tiny rock missed the house completely.

There was a reason why she had never gotten involved in sports, though she had the perfect physique for the girls basketball team, she didn’t have much hand-eye coordination. She sighed at her lack of ability to hit a decently sized target only feet from her.

She picked up another stone and tossed it again. It hit the window this time with a light tik. She did a victorious fist pump into the air, then remembered that she was trying not to be seen. She ducked down next to the bush and watched the window.

Dianna had always wanted to try this, getting someone’s attention in the dead of night by throwing a rock at the window. But until now, she’s never had a reason to do it. The plan had come to her as she did her homework. She spent the last hour and a half setting the whole thing up, and now it was time to see if her work paid off.

She waited for another moment, then threw a third rock, she hit the window dead center this time. It made a louder tik, and she hoped it wasn’t loud enough to wake anyone else in the house up. There was only one person in this house that she was willing to risk her father’s wrath for, and he was sleeping in the room across from her.

She was about to toss another stone, when the window opened up. Dianna saw Michael’s face peering out past the screen; he didn’t see her. She quickly went up to the window.

Behind the screen, Michael looked both groggy and surprised. He was shirtless, revealing to her for the first time what kind of body he had under the t-shirts. He wasn’t ripped, but he wasn’t flabby either, she would say well toned and a bit on the hairy side. He was wearing light gray sweat pants as far as she could tell. He rubbed his eyes, yawned, and gave her a head nod. He was still half-asleep, but he still looked pretty hot.

“I’m sorry to wake you, Michael.” She was suddenly aware of the temperature being in the low forties, and felt bad for making him stand at an open window.

Michael put up a finger, telling her to hold on a moment. He reached behind him and picked up a small whiteboard and a marker. He erased what was there, which looked like a list of some sort, and wrote,

“Dianna, is everything alright?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine.” She was suddenly nervous, she had to struggle to say why she was here. “Umm, I was wondering if you would come with me for a short walk, there’s something I want to show you.”

Michael looked to his clock on his night stand.

“It’s one in the morning.”

She nodded. “I know. But it’s Saturday tomorrow, so we don’t have school.”

“What about curfew?”

“It’ll be tricky, but I’ve snuck out after curfew before, that and I have a bit of protection, I can make sure we don’t get into any trouble.”

Michael just stared at her, he seemed fully awake now.

“What is it that you want to show me?

Dianna guessed he would ask that. “It’s a surprise. Are you coming or not?” Please say yes!

Michael looked around his room, then wrote,

“Sure, let me get dressed and I’ll meet you

outside. Give me a minute.”

“Okay, but hurry. We want to be back before dawn.” She crouched and walked back the bush, she heard the window shut. Her heart was racing! She got Michael to sneak out with her, this might work out well! She waited only a minute.

Michael soon came creeping from around the corner of the house. He was wearing the same thing he did during the day, plus a warm jacket. He also had the whiteboard in his hand. He held it up.

“What’s this all about, Dianna?”

Dianna didn’t waste any time. She grabbed his hand and said, “C’mon! Stay low and in the shadows. We don’t want to get caught if we can avoid it.” She felt his hand close around hers, his hand was warm, strong, and the action of taking her hand showed that he trusted her.

NaNoWriMo Day 15: Half Way There

It’s day fifteen of NaNoWriMo, which is the half way point.  Do you know what’s cool?  I reached 40,000 words!  Which means that if I keep going at the rate I’ve been going, my novel could be 80,000 words by the time NaNo is over.  However, I know for a fact I can’t sustain the story for that long.  My pace has slowed down lately, but that’s okay, I’m quite ahead on my word count, so if I don’t write 3,000 words a day I’ll be more than okay.

At this half way point, I want to look at how far I’ve come.

Before Day 15

When I started this project, I was well prepared.  I started getting ready for this year’s NaNoWriMo at the end of June.  Why, you may ask?  Because I knew I was going to have a busy summer, and I would need to get some stuff out of the way.  So, I started thinking of story ideas.  I had a few different plots I was playing with in my head, and eventually I got it down to one story.  I started forming how things would work, but then, after a few weeks of planning stuff out in my head, a completely different story, Written in Silence, dropped in my lap.  I switched gears and began to form that one instead.  I may save the other plot for next year if it still holds up by then.

I started to write up my character profiles for Dianna and Michael, developing New America, and how the world works in the setting the story takes place in.  Then I created a timeline of events, that I would add or take away from as I saw fit.  I knew that I wanted to be well prepared, so I did as much as I could.  This way, come November 1st, all I had to do was sit down to write it.

When day one hit, I felt like I was about as prepared as I could have been, and it made starting the story a little easier.  I highly recommend preparing for NaNo.  I started to use my timeline of events as a basic guide on where to bring the story, kind of like landmarks, and I filled all of the stuff in between.

After Day 15

Well, now that I’m at the half way point and looking back, my story has changed a bit.  Not the plot, that’s always been the same, but my characters have been altered a bit.  As I wrote, they just came to life and are now slightly different people.  The setting also changed a bit, New America became a very different place than when I started.  And even my timeline of events changed a little.  The point is, I didn’t keep things to a strict and ridged format, I let the story grow and change as I wrote.  Kind of cool!

It’s funny how much has changed in my story if you compare it to my notes from before NaNo started this year, and I must say, I like what it’s become.  Written in Silence was, and still is, a challenge for me, but I’ve been enjoying every minute of it.

NaNoWriMo Day 14: Meet Michael Vadaren

Well, the time has come for you to meet the other main character in my NaNoWriMo project this year.   So far, I’ve given you the plot, the first excerpt, details on the primary protagonist: Dianna Testa, and the second excerpt.  Now it’s time to meet the secondary protagonist.  Though the story is told through Dianna’s eyes, Michael is who the story is really about.  He is a difficult character for me to write, but I’ve had a lot of fun doing so.  Again, this is a very long character profile condensed to just a few main points that you may find interesting.

Meet Michael Vadaren, the secondary protagonist of Written in Silence.

Meet Michael Vadaren

Name: Michael William Vadaren

Nickname: Mike, Mikey, Silent Mike (classmates)

Age: 16

Hair: Lightly curly, short, and black

Skin: Olive (Italian)

Favorite color: Red

Favorite Music: Classical

Food: Hamburgers and French fries

Likes: Silence, dogs, writing, reading, his family, his friends, ice cream, soft and wordless music, eating, playing pranks, movies, and chocolate

Dislikes: Talking, fire, roasted duck, people who never shut up, and Aquaman comics

Most prized possession: His introduction paper

Why?: It’s a paper he uses to introduce himself to people, he wrote it when he was eight, and has used the same paper ever since.

Personality flaws: Stubborn, distrusting, and sarcastic

Personality strengths: Listens, strong willed, fiery spirit, gifted communicator through other venues besides speaking

Michael is an average 16-year-old teenage guy.  However, Micheal doesn’t talk, he does this by choice.  He hasn’t said a word since he was 5-years-old.  When he was 5, his parents were killed in a house fire that nearly killed him, but he was rescued and placed up for adoption.  He was adopted by the Vadaren family and was taken good care of.  Doctors said that he most likely wasn’t talking due to a mixture of trauma and smoke inhalation.  But after a while, it was clear that he was fine physically, except for the burn scars on his left leg, but he still wasn’t talking.  He began to communicate with hand gestures (not sign language) and written word.  When he was older, his adoptive parents brought him to a counselor to help him get over the death of his parents.  When Michael was 8, he expressed a desire not to go to counseling anymore.  He told (wrote) his dad that he was over his parent’s death, and barely remembered his life from before that day.  He told him that he didn’t talk because he had nothing to say.  He lives a normal teenage life, he just doesn’t talk, which gets him made fun of at school.  He doesn’t really like it when people talk too much.  He isn’t understood by most people; his parents and sister, Isabel, understand him the most.  His dream is to become a historian and write historical books.

After the story begins, he becomes good friends with the primary protagonist, Dianna, and eventually falls in love with her.  She’s one of the only people who understands him just as well as his family does…even if she does talk too much.  When Michael’s adoptive family is killed by the villain of the story, he is thrown into a world that requires him to have a voice, and with Dianna’s help, he finds one, while discovering who he is, as well as who he was before his birth parents were killed.

There ya have it, the next character I’ll go into is the villain.

NaNoWriMo Day 6: Meet Dianna Testa

My big news for the night is that I reached 20,000 words!  I wasn’t even really trying to do that, I mean, I reached my first milestone only two days ago.  But between yesterday and today, I just couldn’t stop.  I reached a “good spot” and the words just started to flow.  It was awesome.  Hopefully this kind of inspiration keeps coming.

Well, I’ve given you the plot, and I’ve given you the first excerpt, now it’s time to meet one of the characters.  Now, when I write a character for a story, I like to know as much as I can about them.  I have an in-depth character profile template that I fill out for characters who need them.  Main characters, villains, and important side characters.  It’s 12 pages long…unfilled out!  So, stuff I share here isn’t the only information I have on them.

Meet Dianna Testa, the primary protagonist of Written in Silence.

Meet Dianna Testa

Name: Dianna Erica Testa

Nickname: Di

Age: 16

Hair: Straight, neck length, and dyed black with blonde streaks (naturally curly and brown)

Skin: Caucasian

Favorite color: Red

Favorite Music: Pop

Food: Tacos

Likes: Dogs, kids, talking, stories, reading, games, hot guys, going to the movies, surfing the Net on her Pocketnet, and puzzles

Dislikes: People who don’t explain themselves, New American government, the military, purple food, and moving

Most prized possession: Her teddy bear

Why?: It’s the last gift her father personally gave to her, she got it when she was eight

Personality flaws: Talks too much, never really listens

Personality strengths: Understands people, headstrong, doesn’t back down without a fight

Dianna is a 16-year-old military brat.  Her father is a General in the New American Army, and very strict.  Since the age of seven, she has moved eight times, to eight different providences.  Her family moved to Stanton, Pennsylvania Providence a few days before the start of the story.  Her father has promised her that it’s the last time they move, at least until she’s out of high school.  She talks a lot, especially when she’s nervous, and often finds it hard to shut up.  She loves children, and would often take jobs babysitting.  She has never been able to have a relationship for more than a few months because of how often she moves.  Her dream is to become a children’s counselor, as well as get married and have kids.

After the story begins, she falls for the secondary protagonist, Michael, whom we will discuss on a different day.  She helps him find his voice, and joins him on a journey to take down the tyrannical rule of the story’s villain, whom I will also discuss later on.  She learns to stop talking so much, and learns how to listen, because that is the only way she’ll ever really understand Michael.

One more little titbit.  Though I changed the spelling, I named Dianna after Diana Barry from Anne of Green Gables (shamefully hands over a Man Card).

There ya have it, I’ll share more about other characters as we go.

P.S. No, I did not name Dianna after Chuck Testa.  I gave her that name before I became aware of the video…which is hilarious, by the way.
